If you have a bad credit history, it’s harder to get a loan when you need it. While lenders will still consider you, the chances of a ‘no’ unfortunately are much greater than if you have a good credit history.
What Is Bad Credit?
‘Bad credit’ means that you have a poor credit history, for example if you have missed payments on loans in the past, or if have a bankruptcy against your name. This is different to ‘no credit,’ which is when you have never borrowed money in the past, and therefore lenders have no history to go on to see whether you are a safe bet or not. In both situations, lenders may be put off, as you are perceived to be a bigger risk.
Types Of Loans Available
There are lenders who specialize in lending to those with a previous poor credit history - although the loans do come with higher rates and lower lending limits. The higher risk you are deemed to be, the less favorable the terms of the loan will be. However, bear in mind that your credit history isn’t the only thing they will look at when considering you for a loan.
They will also take your current situation into account - so that means your job, your salary, and any assets you may have that could be used as security on a loan, such as your home.
The Advantages & Disadvantages Of Bad Credit Loans
Whilst you will be subject to higher interest rates and fees, taking on a loan when you have bad credit and sticking to the repayments will actually improve your credit rating for future borrowing. If you can prove that you can keep up the repayments, you’ll be more likely to get better rates in the future. So it might be worth considering a small bad credit loan that you know you can manage, before applying for a larger amount once your credit history has had a chance to improve.
