If you’re looking for a gift for a loved one and just don’t know what to get them, a gift card can be the answer. A gift card is that bit more personal than cash, but still gives the receiver the flexibility of choosing what they want.

For you as the gift giver, you have the satisfaction of choosing a brand you know they like, but without taking the risk of second-guessing their exact taste and buying them a bag or a pair of shoes that they actually hate.

How do they work?

You choose the gift card you want, take it to the retail counter, and it’s loaded up with whatever value you choose. You can pay with cash or by card. Normally the expiry date is one or two years away from the issue date, so it doesn’t have to be spent all at once.

What do they look like?

Gift cards nowadays have really original and thoughtful designs, with many stores designing a range to suit specific occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. They’re also very convenient, with the card being no bigger than a credit card – so the recipient can carry it around in their purse or wallet until they decide to spend it.

Gift cards can be found everywhere. You might find what’s called a ‘gift card mall’ at your grocery store or gas station. These are stands filled with gift cards for all kinds of stores, ranging from clothing and accessories through to bookstores, DIY and even coffee shops.

They are nicely presented with a card backing attached - so no need even to wrap before you give it. For last minute gifts, it’s a no-brainer. You can also find store-specific gift cards in stores themselves, often with a range of envelopes to make them look even more special.
